Tween/Teen

I was mortified to be a witness to a mother's berating of her teen/tween daughter on the weekend.

I am confident that I have done similar things to my own progeny and it made me very sad for this young girl.

The mother upon noticing the length of her daughter's underarm hair announced for all to hear that said daughter must immediately shave. The daughter protested with "I shave once a week" to which the mother replied "you are obviously going to have to do it more often ESPECIALLY with track season coming up". This berating encourage her pre-pubescent sister to try to more closely inspect the sheer length of said horror.

The outcome, the mom stormed out and her daughter remained behind in the change room stifling an inevitable flood of tears refusing to go for a swim in her polka-dotted bikini.

I ached for that girl.

And I wonder, is shaving armpit hair that important.

So, what standard of "beauty" do you adhere to that has been predetermined by someone else/society?
